If there weren’t any high heels, the world would be a bit poorer. But beauty has its price! The consequences for our bodies are too severe not to be named.
Most joys only turn into sin if you overdo them. This certainly applies to the enjoyment of wine and champagne, but also shopping tours and dancing nights. Many women only take their beloved high heels off the shelf on special occasions because of the lack of comfort, so don’t overdo it. And some risks can be avoided as an “occasional wearer.” Still, unfortunately, others are all the greater: According to the University of Alabama, between 2002 and 2012, more than 123,000 women with high heel injuries had to go to the emergency room in the USA. In the vast majority of cases, it was about sprains that inexperienced carriers suffered.
The most significant risks of wearing high heels frequently
Stress On The Metatarsus
High heels inevitably put more stress on the metatarsals. In the long run, this can lead to symptoms of fatigue and thus pain.
Risk To The Ankles
If you are out and about in high heels, it is easier to bend over. Often sprained ankles and overstretched ligaments are the results.
Increased Stress On The Joints
The dangers of osteoarthritis, i.e., high joint wear, increase sharply with high heels. This applies not only to the foot but also to the knee joints and the spine. There is pain and limited mobility.
Deformation Of The Toes
The unnatural position of the feet can lead to permanent deformation. The toes area is particularly affected, as they often have to get squeezed through the day. So-called ball toes are a possible and often painful consequence.
Shortened Tendons
The Achilles tendon on the heel bone, in particular, cannot withstand constant stress despite its strength. It shortens, which can lead to an unpleasant chain reaction with misalignments and inflammation.
Toenail Problems
Ingrown toenails are considered to be one of the most common consequences of wearing high-heeled shoes frequently. This is visually unattractive and often painful. Fungal infections are also favored.
